Drones are stealing my privacy!

predator droneThe rumor mill received an injection of new fuel after the release of Department of Justice memo outlining the Obama Administration’s legal justifications for drone attacks on American citizens. This led to worries about their use over U.S. soil and renewing big brother-esque speculative predictions for what will come. The privacy of which all Americans are entitled is on the verge of collapse. But is it? How valid is this path of logic that begins with this memo and leads to the sacrifice of personal privacy?

TAXES! How does the U.S. measure up?

Tax returnsTaxes are always a political hot potato but over the last few years they have been the searing topic of choice as the Bush Tax Cuts’ expiration was debated by many a political pundit, each and every one of them apparent “experts”. Screams and wails about how much individual or “job creator” taxes will rise or fall should one or the other candidate wins. Constant complaints emanate from the Republican Party and the likes of Grover Norquist that taxes are too high, how any increase will destroy the economy and only lower taxes will save us all despite the large temporary cuts which have been in effect for more than a decade.

Gun Control Debate: A few facts

Gun_ConstitutionGiven the numerous calls for the gun control legislation after the multitude of mass shootings this past year alone and the subsequent debates across the country taking shape now, it goes without saying many a gun control proponent has found themselves in an elongated back and forth with a pro-gun advocate. Much the rhetoric from the pro-gun side includes claims that “They’re taking away our guns” or “Obama is violating the 2nd Amendment, impeach him” or “Gun laws don’t work”. Much of this rhetoric sprouts from any number of right-wing blogs or Fox News opinion page and of course from the current leader of the National Rifle Associate, Wayne LaPierre whose recent comments have yet to endear him in the minds of American public.

Daily Scoop: What did Piers Morgan – Alex Jones Interview Accomplish?

Piers-Morgan laughingWhat did the interview, or more accurately the everything anti-government rant, with Alex Jones actually accomplish? Many of us have watched the video and witnessed the bizarre logic used by the, now infamous, gun rights advocate, blogger and radio host to justify current gun rights laws and what will happen if those guns are taken away. But what was the reasoning behind Mr. Morgan’s offer of a national stage interview with what many would consider a radical, anti-government conspiracy theorist? Well perhaps within the question lies the answer. Was this simply a way to provide one of the prominent faces of the far-right, gun rights advocacy with enough rope to hang himself, along with a sizable portion of the anti-gun control crowd itself?

An article in today’s Christian Science Monitor seems to agree with that assessment. Did it do any good? Maybe if Mr. Morgan steps back, stops baiting the crazy and lets the noose tighten on its own.

Daily Scoop: AIG Considers Suing US Government over Bailouts

AIG Suing TaxpayersA jaw-dropping twist in the story of the Great Recession has emerged from the very seed that spawned the economic collapse itself. A month after paying off its taxpayer provided, government loans AIG is now considering a lawsuit against the very government that saved it from oblivion. One must ask what wires crossed in the brains of the company leadership to think this would be an acceptable route to take.

Feel free to read more in the article below and be sure to read Elizabeth Warren’s response to the lawsuit talk immediately following.

Something else that’s come out of NRA CEO LaPierre’s Mouth

Wayne LaPierreAfter defending his organization’s “logical” stance to arm elementary schools to prevent mass shooting tragedies on Meet the Press this morning, it seemed appropriate to revisit what else has leapt from Wayne LaPierre’s mouth highlighting his “logical”, and sane, state of mind.

Obama’s Gun Control Conspiracy [Repost]

While great for a laugh, this excerpt from the Colbert Report illustrates how the political rumor mill stretches and contorts real world actions into messages that create fears in the general public that don’t actually exist.

Daily Scoop: When you don’t vote…

How Dark Money Helped Republicans Hold the House and Hurt Voters

Gerrymander_In the November election, a million more Americans voted for Democrats seeking election to the U.S. House of Representatives than Republicans. But that popular vote advantage did not result in control of the chamber. Instead, despite getting fewer votes, Republicans have maintained a commanding control of the House. Such a disparity has happened only three times in the last century.

Analysts and others have identified redistricting as a key to the disparity. Republicans had a years-long strategy of winning state houses in order to control each state’s once-a-decade redistricting process.

Daily Scoop: Why the Bush tax cuts were enacted

Washington Post Factchecker:

GW Bush_cropWe’ve noted this history before, but many people have forgotten it. Given that the dispute over whether to extend all of the Bush tax cuts has now led the nation to the edge of the “fiscal cliff,” let’s take a trip back in time to recall why the Bush tax cuts were enacted in the first place. (The Fact Checker covered passage of the Bush tax cuts as an economic policy reporter for The Washington Post.)

Oddly, a key reason the tax cut became reality was because of a fear the United States soon would have zero debt.

Gun Control: Where do our priorities lie? [Repost]

Once again the nation faces yet another mass shooting incident, this time leaving 20 elementary school children dead in small town Connecticut. This tragic even marks the 18th mass shooting this year alone resulting in the deaths of 99 people and the injury of 92 others. This, of course, only accounts for the nationally reported events, not the multitude of other shooting deaths that occur daily in our own cities and towns.

In the wake of such disturbing events as these we must ask ourselves, “When will be okay to talk about gun control?” When will the taboo of this issue be broken? So few have the conviction and courage to speak out, to say what needs to be said instead of sinking into the sidelines afraid of the controversy. Bob Costas should be applauded for his remarks after the Kansas City Chiefs murder-suicide. Instead he was lambasted for daring to speak of control.
