Daily Scoop: Dare we dream?

High-Speed Rail_CAFor anyone who’s traveled or lived abroad in Europe the thought of hopping a train and heading crosscountry, the Obama Administration’s high speed rail push was a cause to cheer. Unfortunately, an obstinant Republican Party, fresh from their spending binges of the Bush years, cried foul, screaming about huge debts while governors of Florida, Wisconsin and Ohio refused the stimulative funds meant to initiate these projects.

These projects would have created high-speed rail transporation hubs in strategic metropolitan areas across the country and

TAXES! How does the U.S. measure up?

Tax returnsTaxes are always a political hot potato but over the last few years they have been the searing topic of choice as the Bush Tax Cuts’ expiration was debated by many a political pundit, each and every one of them apparent “experts”. Screams and wails about how much individual or “job creator” taxes will rise or fall should one or the other candidate wins. Constant complaints emanate from the Republican Party and the likes of Grover Norquist that taxes are too high, how any increase will destroy the economy and only lower taxes will save us all despite the large temporary cuts which have been in effect for more than a decade.

Take one semi truck, pack it tight with 27 tons of delicious, caramel-flavored goat cheese, park it in the middle of a strategically placed highway tunnel well above the Arctic Circle, give it a bit of the crème brûlée treatment and Voilà!

Daily Scoop: State GOP seek electoral changes to win elections

2012 Electoral MapWhile I do agree that there should be more proportional allocation of the electoral college votes but the reasons behind the GOP’s motivations to make the changes now are highly disingenuous. Just like their attempts to suppress Democratic voters this last election and the gerrymandering of many districts after the 2010 midterms this electoral change is only about finding a way to skew the system to win.

Gun Control: Where do our priorities lie? [Repost]

Once again the nation faces yet another mass shooting incident, this time leaving 20 elementary school children dead in small town Connecticut. This tragic even marks the 18th mass shooting this year alone resulting in the deaths of 99 people and the injury of 92 others. This, of course, only accounts for the nationally reported events, not the multitude of other shooting deaths that occur daily in our own cities and towns.

In the wake of such disturbing events as these we must ask ourselves, “When will be okay to talk about gun control?” When will the taboo of this issue be broken? So few have the conviction and courage to speak out, to say what needs to be said instead of sinking into the sidelines afraid of the controversy. Bob Costas should be applauded for his remarks after the Kansas City Chiefs murder-suicide. Instead he was lambasted for daring to speak of control.

And some still wonder why he was re-elected…

For some Obama’s re-election represented the coming of the rapture but for the rest of us it was a time to cheer as we realized, with a unified voice the majority of Americans chose the intelligent, human with a great sense of humor over the robot.

How can anyone still wonder why he was re-elected?
